Rhinoceros hornbill up close9/9/2023 My trip to Kuching also had my best food experience of the year (and of the decade actually). The range of the Rhinoceros Hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) extends from Borneo to Indonesia, peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and into Thailand. I took all the photos included here during the first stop. Either they were far away and my camera wasn’t good enough to zoom that far ( my new camera would have made a big difference) or they were very close in which case there was only a tiny window of opportunity for seeing them (they were basically just a blur to me, you would hear them and then try to focus there and just catch a blur before they were hidden behind leaves again).ĭeeper in the forest I also saw and heard a bunch flying around but it was even harder to get photos that time. It is hard to judge as they would often disappear behind trees, but I would guess over 8 were flying around. It was also amazing how many were flying around. Borneo subspecies is generally smaller with shorter, broader casque sharply upturned and curled at tip Javan subspecies has broader black tail band and forward. It is the state bird of Sarawak and the National bird of Malaysia. In captivity it can live for up to 90 years. The Rhinoceros Hornbill grows to 90–120 cm long and weighing 2–3 kg. I didn’t remember that Bornean Hornbills (Rhinoceros Hornbills) were huge and it was quite surprising how large they were. And during my stop hornbills started flying around. It was the longest most vertical hike I have been on. you in the wilderness and brining you as close to nature as you can get. The hike of Mount Santubong was amazing itself, and I will post more about it later. Accommodation at Pafuri Border Camp caters to a variety of guest requirements. From there it was a 15 minute ride to the trailhead. I stayed in a treehouse cabin at treehouse cabin, Permai Rainforest Resort (in Damai about 45 minutes from Kuching). And it’s precisely here that I recently came across southern-ground hornbills and grey-headed parrots on top of the daily viewing pleasure provided by the abundance of white-fronted bee eaters, starlings and rollers.My single most amazing experience during several years in Malaysia was watching Rhinoceros Hornbills fly around on my hike on Mount Santubong on Borneo in Malaysia. Compared to my recent photographic encounter with New Zealand’s smallest endemic bird, the rifleman (height 8cm and weighing 6g), these two rhinoceros hornbill were something entirely different. Of the 500 species in the park, 350 can be found here. Rhinoceros hornbills can reach a height of 1.3m with a wing span of 1.5m and weigh up to 3kg. While birding is a popular pastime throughout the park, it’s the far northern region towards Pafuri and Punda Maria that’s commonly regarded as a birding haven. A number of uncommon, rare and vulnerable species, such as the southern ground-hornbill, bateleur eagle, grey-headed parrot, martial eagle and kori bustard, can be found, their populations benefiting from the protected environment. FOR ABUNDANT LANDSCAPES, BIRDLIFE AND HISTORYīeyond the pleasures of big-five sightings, the birdlife in the park is spectacular. The train theme continues at the adjoining Kruger Station, where children can enjoy the kids' zone, 360° cinema and ice cream cafe, while adults can feast on morsels from the deli, restaurant, coffee cafe or bar.īetween talking a short stroll to see what’s on offer here, enjoying twice-daily game drives and spending time next to one of the two pools, days lend themselves to effortless unwinding in this wildlife-rich area of the park.
